The European Commission recently decided to impose anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese solar imports including solar panels, cells, and wafers. The initial setting will be 11.8% but it is expected to rise over 50% in a couple of months.
The European commission blames China for selling solar products below cost to dominate the European market and overwhelm the solar energy companies. Even though there was strong opposition to the anti-dumping measures, especially from China’s top importer in Europe, Germany, but the European Commission has the authority to make such decisions without the approval of politicians.
Chinese solar imports to EU add up to more than $20 Billion a year. EU is the largest importer of Chinese solar energy products, even with these anti-dumping measures that probably won’t change as US has already passed a similar law to avoid Chinese domination.
